Proyecto Arqueológico del Valle de Andagua (PAVA) and associated research seek to bridge gaps between research on "ancient/prehistoric" and "modern/historic eras and empires," examining how local populations made, remade, and abandoned places and landscapes in the context of Inka and Spanish colonial statecraft in the Southern Peruvian Andes. In doing so, this research offers a multi-scalar, long-term and
comparative perspective of local occupations and cultural practices in the
region during pre-Inka (e.g. Late Intermediate Period, AD1000-1400), Inka
(AD1400-1532, Late Horizon) and Spanish occupations and rule (AD1532-1821),
providing original data and research through using multiple archaeological
field methods including, full coverage regional pedestrian and site-intensive
surveys, excavations, and spatial mapping. Moreover, this project incorporates historical and archival research as well as embracing ethnographic methods to provide insight into long-term regional processes that can be juxtaposed with archaeological data.
A guiding thread in this research project is a conviction in the empirical possibilities of anthropological research that challenges everyday assumptions, demystifies the past, and appreciates human diversity and understanding. Embracing an anthropological and archaeological perspective, this research further seeks to understand how places and landscapes come to matter, social memories come to form and why they may become contested.
PAVA further recognizes the imperative for collaborative research and relations with local community stakeholders, and therefore is constantly dedicated to fostering various collaborative engagements with the residents and community of Andagua. PAVA is made possible and works through the accordance and approval of the Peruvian Government's Ministry of Culture and in collaboration with the Communidad Campesino de Andagua, as well as the Municipality of Andagua.

RESEARCH PHASES
SURVEY
Beginning in September 2015, PAVA started
research by carrying out regional pedestrian survey of the Andagua Valley, systematically
documenting all archaeological sites. The survey covered a proposed 75km2. Survey was completed throughout the months of September, October and November.
LAB ANALYSIS
After a successful and exciting field season conducting regional survey, PAVA is currently realizing lab analysis of the artifacts and data recovered during this first foundational phase of fieldwork. Lab analysis will continue in Arequipa for the following months until its completion and subsequent fieldwork phase of excavations.
Our laboratory phase involves detailed and comprehensive analysis, documentation, photography of artifacts, including ceramics, lithics (stones), botanical, metals, glass, along with various spatial data recovered during survey. Laboratory and analyses stages of research are critical and play an instrumental role of preparing collections for future curation and study in museums and archives.

EXCAVATIONS
Based upon findings from the regional survey, PAVA will carry out excavations, anticipated to be carried out starting by the beginning of June 2016 and continuing through early August. Through survey PAVA has identified several major sites and features in the valley that should reveal foundational knowledge on the cultural histories of the region.
PAVA's excavations in the Andagua will be the first of its kind in the valley, with no intensive systematic archaeological and academic excavations ever occurring in the valley before.
Involvement for those interested in participating in either excavations or lab analysis is open. Please see participation and inquiries page for more details and contact information.

(e.g. Periodo Intermedio Tardío), Inka y
